General care instructions

Only general care instructions can be given because the care can be as different as its variety of species in the realm of cacti and succulents. More detailed and better care instructions can be found in special forums or special websites related to the species, as well as in selected specialist literature.

Cacti

Cactus should generally have a very air-permeable substrate, so that the roots are protected from over-wetting and associated rot is prevented. The location should be as bright as possible (be careful of the midday sun in the summer months) and airy. During the growth phase should be poured regularly (suitable fertilizer according to the packaging), so that the substrate can dry well in the meantime.

In winter, the plants should be kept as cool as possible (8 to 12 degrees celsius, except for heat-loving species) and watering should be avoided if possible.

Succulents

Most succulents feel in a slightly humic substrate with coarse fractions, for better soil aeration, most comfortable. The location should be as bright as possible (be careful of the midday sun in the summer months) and airy. During the growth phase should be poured regularly (suitable fertilizer according to the packaging), so that the upper layers of the substrate can dry, steady light residual moisture is well tolerated by most succulents and promotes their growth. A summer outdoor location is beneficial for most types.

In the winter, the plants should be kept as cool as possible (8 to 12 degrees, apart from heat-loving species) and watering should be avoided if possible. If necessary, moisten easily during good weather periods to avoid over-drying of the plants.

Mesembs

Mesembs should best be cultivated in a well air permeable substrate free of loam and clay fractions. The location should be very bright (be careful of the midday sun in the summer months), as well as provide as much fresh air as possible. During the growth phase should be watered regularly (suitable fertilizer according to the packaging), preferably always when slight wrinkles occur on the plants. Too much watering can partially burst the plant body. In winter, the plants should be kept as cool as possible (8 to 12 degrees, except for heat-loving species) and kept dry. Exceptions are the so-called winter waxers such as Conophytum, these should be dry in the summer and kept slightly moist in winter even at cool temperatures.
